Rabun Rendezvous

The 22nd annual Rabun Rendezvous will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at the NEW Dillard House Conference Center.  Program presenter will be Commissioner Noel Holcomb, Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The cost is  $30 for adults and $25 for youth of 15 and under. Payment may be made with cash, personal check, Visa or Mastercard.  Reservations are not needed. Just pay at the door.5 PM Social, 6:30 PM Dinner;

There will be a special auction for a framed pen & ink Tom Landreth original: Brook Trout (never before offered). All the proceeds from sale of this striking original will be donated to the Georgia Back the Brookieâ program in Tom’s memory.

There will be door prizes, over 80 bucket raffle items, and over 100 silent auction items including art, crafts, rods & reels, fly tying materials, fly vests, tackle packs, fly assortments, a Big Green Egg, goodies from the kitchens of the Rabunites, the famous Rabunite map of THE RIVER and much, much more. Special items include: Three different framed limited edition Tom Landreth prints, Broderick Crawford’s 1st place Commemorative Colorado Wildlife Habitat Stamp print, a framed limited edition TU Special Edition print, and a rare duck stamp print; An Orvis Zero Gravity Rod 906-4 with Mid Arbor III reel, SAGE Z-Axis rod 905-4, Orvis CFO III reel, plus 4 or 5 other rod and reel outfits;  hand-crafted fly tying desk by Ray Kearns; fishing vests by Cabela’s, LL Bean, & Woolrich; woodworking, sewing & knitting crafts.

Benefits Mountain Lakes Regional Hospital

The Auxiliary Volunteers of Mountain Lakes Medical Center, Clayton, will present an exciting Book and Gift Fair Sale Tuesday, November 11, in the lobby of the Hospital. Books are Fun, a Reader’s Digest Company offers a vast variety of books for everyone at fantastic prices. The big event is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  The proceeds of the Book & Gift Fair benefits Mountain Lakes Medical Center Auxiliary by providing funds for the purchase of new equipment for the hospital.  Everyone is invited to the Book and Gift Fair to support our local Medical Center.

Bluegrass Benefit Dinner

If you are out and about in the Northeast Georgia Mountains this weekend and want  to enjoy tasty hot dogs and old-time bluegrass music, then be on hand at the Satolah volunteer fire station next Saturday, October 25.

Curtis Blackwell and the Dixie Bluegrass Boys, and Carolina Backroads, two of the most popular bands on the area’s bluegrass circuit, will provide the entertainment for station’s annual Fall Hot Dog Dinner and Bluegrass Benefit. Food will be served at 5 p..  and music begins at 7 p.m.

“Everyone is invited,” said James Reed, fire chief for Station 8, located in Rabun County 3.5 miles south of the boundary line on state Route 28 (the Highlands-Walhalla Road.)

Dinner plates are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children, with all proceeds going toward the general support of this all-volunteer fire station.

Join us for an unparalleled culinary adventure in the lush north Georgia mountains. The second dinner of the series will be prepared by two award winning Atlanta chefs, using locally grown ingredients, and served in the Stack’s infamous “party barn” at Tiger Mountain Vineyards.

Husband and wife Chefs Joe Truex and Mihoko Obunai, chef/owners of re’past Restaurant in Atlanta will be guest chefs for this incredible adventure hosted by Leckie and Bill Stack on the gorgeous grounds of their lovely “piece of paradise” in north Georgia. Overlooking a theatre of vineyards and fruit orchards, with the peak of Tiger Mountain as the backdrop, you will not find a lovelier setting for an event. This will be an experience to remember, but you will have to make a difficult decision, as we have designed a “choose your own adventure” format.  Arrive at 5:30pm for walking tour of the vineyard and orchards with owners Bill and Leckie Stack, followed by an intimate dinner paired with fabulous reserve wines in the barn. The wine pairings will explore the inspiring cousins to the north Georgia vines. Side by side, we will drink old world malbec next to the malbec of Rabun County. Dine with the chefs and the farmers in an intimate setting ten feet from the kitchen. The cost of the 5-course dinner, with wine pairings is $150, including tax and gratuity.

“Art at the Lake” Show and Sale

Here’s your opportunity to see some of the best art in the region and chat with your favorite artists!

You are invited to the 2008 ART AT THE LAKE SHOW AND SALE on Saturday July 26th from ten to six, with a wine and cheese social at 3:30 p.m. Over 60 fine artists will be featured, and the level of artistic talent under one roof is rare!

A wide variety of art will be displayed and for sale, including oils, acrylics, pastels, photography, watercolors, encaustic (hot wax), mixed media, jewelry, turned wood, stained glass, painted furniture, and pottery

The setting for the show is the breathtaking Lake Rabun Pavillion in Lakemont. The Pavilion Map If you love art, this is a show you won’t want to miss and is well worth the drive to the scenic Northeast Georgia mountains!

Admission and parking IS free! The show is hosted by the North Georgia Arts Guild. 10% of artists’ proceeds goes to The Lake Rabun Foundation. The foundation supports many worthy causes in the local community as well as providing college scholarships to deserving high school seniors in Rabun County.

Summer Solstice Benefit Concert for the Chattooga Conservancy

The Chattooga Conservancy will present the band “Old Enough To Know Better” for a benefit concert at the Stekoa Creek Trading Company, on Saturday evening on June 21st . Also appearing will be “Hank Belew and Carmel Ridge”. All proceeds from the concert will be used for the Chattooga Conservancy’s ongoing work to improve water quality in Stekoa Creek, which flows through downtown Clayton in Rabun County.

Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. A contribution of $10 for adults and $5 for children is suggested for admission, while more generous donations are welcome. Advance tickets may be purchased at www.chatoogariver.org and click on the “Buy Tickets Now” button. Come hear great music, have some fun, and support the big job of cleaning up Stekoa Creek!!

“Old Enough To Know Better” is a quartet of talented musicians that includes band member Allison Adams, who grew up in Rabun County. Allison sings alto vocals, and plays the concertina and guitar. The other band members are Doug Oster on bass, guitar, and bass vocals; Larry Schulz on baritone vocals, guitar, bass, and mandolin; and Britt Dean on tenor vocals, guitar, and percussion.

The quartet performs a diverse collection of songs in a wide variety of styles that feature rich, close harmonies. Their repertoire includes original songs; shape-note hymns; bluegrass gospel songs; a Sea Island hymn from the Georgia coast; folk ballads; Beatles, Beach Boys, and Ink Spots tunes; songs from the “doo-wop” era, and more. The band makes frequent appearances in the metro Atlanta area, and around the northeast Georgia region, as well as the nearby John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina.

Carmel Ridge is a traditional bluegrass group that draws on a rich collection of music from the classic era of Bluegrass .

The concert venue at the Stekoa Creek Trading Company is located just off the southbound lane of Highway 441 within Clayton city limits, just behind the Checkers Hamburgers. Come enjoy the “Old Enough To Know Better” and “Carmel Ridge” performance, while supporting the Chattooga Conservancy’s, Trout Unlimited’s and the City of Clayton’s efforts to clean up Stekoa Creek!
