Fall has officially arrived!

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

A brilliant season of color is predicted for the Northeast Georgia Mountains! In just a few short weeks Rabun County’s forests will turn into a blanket of color. Enough rain, bright sunny days with cooler temperatures, and clear, cool nights will create a brilliant show!  Color can already be seen in blackberry bushes, assorted wildflowers, including Goldenrod, asters and white snakeroot.

Look for sugar maples (orange and red), tulip poplars (yellow), sassafras black gum (red), sourwood (red), birches (yellow), and oaks (red or brown).
Make your leaf-looking travel plans now! Take advantage of several scenic drives and trails in and around Rabun County. Be sure to take your camera and share your photos with us!

To help track the changing leaves and plan your trip, Georgia’s State Parks will launch Leaf Watch 2008 beginning October 1.  Black Rock Mountain and Tallulah Gorge are among the most popular of Georgia’s 48 state parks. Here’s a link to the webcam showcasing the mountainside of Black Rock State Park.
